STORRS, Conn. – UConn grad student Eliza Bowman (Darien, Conn.) tied the program record with eight goals Saturday afternoon to lead the No. 23 nationally ranked Huskies to a 19-16 win over visiting UMass at Morrone Stadium.
Bowman became the fourth Husky in program history to score eight goals in a game, matching former players Sydney Watson, Grace Nolan (3x) and Kelsey Catalano to hit the mark.
The win moves the Huskies to 4-2 on the young season while UMass falls to 2-3 overall.
UConn got off to a fast start as sophomore Emma Dacey (Hopkinton, Mass.) notched the first two for the Huskies and Bowman got her first to make it a 3-1 lead five minutes in. From there it was all UMass in the first as the Minutewomen rang off seven-straight, three coming off the stick of Kassidy Morris to lead 8-3.
The second quarter was all UConn as the Husky defense pitched a shutout and the offense responded with seven-straight of their own. Bowman scored three times in the second and r-junior Rayea Davis (Henrietta, N.Y.) ended the run with her 19th of the season to give UConn a 10-8 lead into halftime.
UMass found their offense out of the break and put seven on the board in the third to re-take the lead, three coming from Tessa Shields to lead 15-14 into the fourth quarter. UConn went to back-up goaltender Sofia Oximana (Seattle, Wash.) for the final stanza and the sophomore helped backstop the defensive unit as they kept UMass off the scoreboard until 1:05 left in the game.
The Husky offense took over with Bowman scoring twice more and freshman Megan O'Brien (Morris Plains, N.J.) finding the back of the cage three times as the Huskies scored five-straight to pull away and seal a 19-16 win.
Oximana made three saves in the final stanza to earn the win in goal for UConn. The Huskies outshot the Minutewomen 45-31and also won the draw control battle, 19-17, in the win.
UConn will be back in action next Saturday, March 8 when they travel to UAlbany for a 1 pm.
