Huskies Travel to Berkeley To Face Bears

BERKELEY, Calif. – The UConn baseball team kicks off its first series of the season with a three-game set against the Cal Bears at Stu Gordon Stadium beginning on Friday, February 23 at 9:05 p.m. ET. Saturday's game is set for a 5:05 p.m. ET first pitch and Sunday starts at 4:05 p.m. ET. All three games will be video streamed on the Cal Pac-12 Live Stream and audio broadcast will be on MIXLR.
UConn enters the weekend after winning two of three at the USF Baseball Invitational with a pair of one-run victories against Louisville and USF. The Huskies one loss also came by one run to Indiana State, 2-1.
The Huskies pitching staff shined on Opening Weekend with all three starting pitchers worked into the sixth inning with Ian Cooke (6 IP), Stephen Quigley (5.1 IP) and Garrett Coe (5.1 IP) all allowing one run or fewer.
Tommy Ellisen and Brady Afthim combined to throw 3.2 shutout frames to nail down a one-run win against USF, 2-1. Afthim struck out the side in the ninth to record his first career save.
Freshman RHP Ben Schild dazzled in his collegiate debut by earning his first collegiate victory out of the UConn pen. Schild logged 2.2 shutout frames that featured a 4-6-3 double play against the first batter he faced to strand the bases loaded in the 7th. The appearance mirrored another UConn debut with Ian Cooke firing 2.2 shutout innings to earn his first collegiate victory on Opening Day in 2022 vs. USF.
The Huskies traveled to Berkeley last season and split the weekend with a comeback win in extra innings against Cal Poly, followed by a loss to the Bears, 4-2. The Huskies and Bears were scheduled to play one more game against Cal but Sunday's game only went a few innings before being canceled due to rain.
UConn is 6-12 against the Pac-12 under head coach Jim Penders with a 1-1 mark against Cal. Against the rest of the conference of champions, the Huskies are 1-2 vs. Stanford, 3-0 vs. USC, 0-2 vs. Washington, 1-1 against Oregon State, 0-3 vs. Oregon and 0-3 vs. Arizona State. 2024 will be the final season of the Pac-12 Conference.
