BERKELEY, Calif. - The UConn baseball team (2-2) dropped its series opener against the University of California, 8-4, on Friday night at Evans Diamond.

The Huskies jumped out to a 3-0 start through three innings with Jake Studley hitting his second home run of the season, a solo shot, in the first inning.

Sophomore Ryan Daniels followed with a two-run single in the third to push the UConn lead to 3-0.

UConn starting pitcher posted three scoreless frames and struck out a career-high eight to start the ballgame. The lefthander ran into trouble in the fourth allowing back-to-back homers to Rodney Green Jr. and Peyton Schulze to start the inning. It looked like Coe would exit the fourth with a 3-2 lead but a dropped fly ball extended the frame and allowed the Bears to take a 4-3 advantage.

Matt Garbowski answered back to lead off the fifth with his first home run of the season to even the score at 4-4. But that would be all for the scoring for the Huskies.

A pair of two-run homers from Seth Gwynn in the fifth and Ryan Tayman in the seventh proved to be the difference as the Bears moved to 4-1 on the year.

A few Huskies made their debuts on Friday with Joe Cinnella making his UConn debut out of the bullpen, firing 1.1 scoreless frames. Freshmen Tommy Turner and Charlie West both came in to open their collegiate careers in the eighth inning.

Studley, Garbowski, Korey Morton and Maddix Dalena all recorded multi-hit performances in the losing effort.

The series resumes on Saturday with a 5:05 p.m. ET/ 2:05 p.m. PT first pitch.

Game Notes

Garrett Coe finished the night with a career-high 11 strikeouts. He is the first UConn pitcher since Stephen Quigley in 2023 to record double digit strikeouts in a game.
Jake Studley has hit safely in all four games this season.
The nine hits for the Huskies on Friday was a season-high.
