Huskies Take Home First Victory With 3-0 Over Duquesne

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – The University of Connecticut women's volleyball team beats Duquesne in three sets to take home their first victory of the season.
UConn entered the match this afternoon looking to bounce back following a three-set defeat to Penn State Friday night. The Huskies would start the match hot and never look back. UConn would jump out to a 7-1 lead forcing Duquesne to take a timeout. The dukes would close in on UConn cutting their lead to four, however the Huskies would regroup and rely heavily on the upperclassmen to bring them to victory. The Huskies would take set one 25-16 led by senior Allie Garland who had five kills.
Duquesne would not go away without a fight. UConn and Duquesne would trade points the whole set as the largest lead by either team was three. Freshman Emma Werkmeister would enter the match and be a huge spark for the Huskies as she would come in and have three kills to give UConn the 26-24 set two victory. Madi Whitmire was a steady presence throughout the match as she would finish the second set with 11 assists.
The third set would mirror the first set as the Huskies would jump out to the early lead. UConn was firing on all cylinders, as they would take a 15-10 lead forcing Duquesne to take the early timeout. UConn would continue to fight and come away with the 25-16 victory. The Huskies would close out the match with an ace by senior Karly Berkland.
The points were spread across the board for UConn. Allie Garland would finish the match with nine kills, Taylor Pannell, Emma Wekmeister, and Kennadie Jake-Turner would finish with seven, and Caylee Parker would follow close behind with six. Madi Whitmire would finish the match with 35 assists, and senior Karly Berkland would be the steady presence on defense with 15 digs.

UConn will return home as they will prep to head out to West Point New York for the Army Invitational where they will take on St. Francis, Kansas, and Army.
