STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - UConn (0-2, 0-0 Big East) fell to Penn State (1-0, 0-0 Big Ten) in straight sets, 0-3, on Saturday at Rec Hall.ย UConn recorded 27 kills and 6 service aces in the match.
Penn State capitalized on an early attack error and service ace to take a 2-0 lead. The Huskies responded with a kill by Courtney Grayson, assisted by Audrey Jensen, narrowing the gap to 2-1. Despite another service error from Penn State that brought UConn within striking distance at 3-5, Penn State managed to pull ahead with a series of kills, extending its lead to 13-5.
UConn attempted to rally with kills from Helena Einarsdottir and Maja Daca, but Penn State maintained control, reaching 20 points against UConn's 10. A late push by the Huskies, including a block by Jensen and Grayson, brought the score to 14-22, but it was not enough to overcome Penn State's lead. The set concluded with the Nittany Lions taking it 25-14.
UConn capitalized on an early service error by Penn State to take the initial lead in the second set. Jensen set up Helena Einarsdottir for a kill, extending UConn's advantage to 2-0. The Huskies continued to rally, with Sydney Borowy and Daca contributing key kills to level the score at 14.
UConn fought back from a 16-14 deficit, highlighted by back-to-back service aces from Hazuna Akishige. However, a late surge by Penn State, culminating in a block on an Einarsdottir attack, secured the set. Penn State edged out the win, 25-21.
UConn gained momentum in the third set with a kill by Daca and a service ace from Maggie Carley. The Huskies evened the score at 10-10 after an attack error by the Nittany Lions, followed by a service ace by Daca. Despite a late effort, including a kill by Olivia Grenadier, UConn fell short as Penn State secured the set with a 25-18 score.
Daca led the team with 8 kills on a .381 hitting percentage, adding 13 digs and 2 aces to her performance. Jensen contributed with 13 assists and a block assist. Grayson recorded 6 kills with a .545 hitting percentage and added 2 block assists. Isabella Sohl also facilitated the offense with 12 assists and 4 digs.
