Huskies Cap UConn Challenge With Win Over Central Conn.

STORRS, Conn. – Sophomore Caylee Parker had a season-high 24 kills and 16 digs to lead the UConn volleyball team (3-3) to a 3-1 win over Central Connecticut (2-4) Saturday afternoon in Gampel Pavilion.
Parker had her third straight double-double against the Blue Devils while hitting at a .488 clip and adding five blocks. She was named to the all-tournament team along with freshman Jasmine Davis.
Davis tallied 15 digs and five blocks against Central. Redshirt sophomore Courtney Morris also had a double-double with 40 assists and 10 digs.
The Huskies put up a dominant 25-12 win in the first set despite it being UConn's slowest offensively. The Huskies capitalized on Blue Devil errors and string together four straight points to end the set.
Central Connecticut took the second set behind 17 kills. The teams remained evenly matched through the game with nine ties and six lead changes. UConn forced a Central timeout down just two at 21-19, but the Blue Devils were able to notch four of the next seven points.
The Huskies regrouped quickly, scoring the first three points of the third set. UConn strung together seven straight points in the middle of the set to take a 17-7 lead. UConn didn't allow Central within eight points for the rest of the game and Parker scored the set-winning kill at 25-16.
After being matched early in the fourth, UConn went on a 13-2 run. A pair of Parker kills put the Huskies ahead 23-14 and kills from Davis and Genna Florig helped seal the match win for the Huskies.
Connecticut hit .287 in the match, including three sets above .300. UConn held a 52-40 advantage in kills and notched 12 total blocks.
Parker and Davis are joined on the all-tournament team by Ashlyn Eisenga (Central Conn.), Jamie Smith (Iona), Jill Strockis (Boston College) and Jewel Strawberry (Boston College). Amaka Chukwujekwu (Boston College) was named the tournament MVP.
UConn travels to Athens Ohio, for the Ohio Invite next weekend, where the Huskies will face Virginia, College of Charleston and host Ohio University. The weekend will serve as a homecoming for head coach Ellen Herman-Kimball '10 and assistant coach Abby Gilleland '16.
