CONWAY, S.C. – Sophomore Sydney Watson led the Huskies with five goals , senior captain Caitlin Leary netted a hat trick and junior Olivia Miles added two goals and two assists, but UConn women's lacrosse came up short despite a valiant effort, falling to Coastal Carolina, 15-14, Tuesday afternoon at Brooks Stadium.
UConn was even with Coastal in shots on goal (27-27) and held the edge in draw controls (21-9) and clear percentage (17-18, 94%).
Coastal Carolina jumped out 3-nil, forcing the Huskies to call a timeout. UConn responded well after the timeout, as Sydney Watson slotted two home to cut the deficit to one. The Chanticleers opened up a 9-4 advantage on the scoreboard, but Huskies never wavered, and headed into the locker room down two, 9-7, following a goal from Leary and back-to-back strikes by Miles.
UConn put the first two of the second half on the board to knot the score at nine, but Coastal Carolina countered with two of its own. After back-and-forth action over the ensuing 13 minutes, UConn grabbed a 14-13 lead following a goal from Oliva Troy and Watson's fourth and fifth strikes of the afternoon.
Unfortunately, the Chanticleers tallied the final two scores of the game, including a crucial goal with 59 seconds remaining to hold on for the win.
