Huskies Fall Short Against Cincinnati

CINCINNATI, Ohio – The UConn volleyball team fell just short against Cincinnati (20-5, 11-1 American) on Sunday afternoon. The Huskies (9-14, 3-9 American) battled hard against a very difficult opponent in the Bearcats. UConn drops its second straight game and finishes the weekend road trip 0-2.
How it Happened
The Huskies and Bearcats exchanged points early in set one, before Cincinnati opened up a 14-9 lead. The Bearcats continued to put the pressure on and went up 17-11, forcing UConn to use its second timeout. Following the break, UConn could not quite claw back, and Cincinnati took the first set 25-17. The second set was another close one at the start. Cincinnati opened a slight lead before UConn battled back to take a 13-11 lead. The Bearcats would not go away and would take a 20-18 lead late in the second set. The Huskies battled to tie the game at 21, before taking a tightly contested second set by a score of 26-24 to tie the match 1-1.
UConn and Cincinnati again began the third set with back and forth scoring. The Huskies led 13-11 at the midway mark of the third set, before the Bearcats evened the game at 15-15. UConn rallied late, with back to back service aces from Genna Florig to put the Huskies up 22-20. UConn would go on to win the third set 25-23, giving the Huskies a 2-1 lead in the match. The fourth set, like the previous three, began with even play. Cincinnati pulled away and took a 20-13 lead forcing a UConn timeout. The Bearcats would take the fourth set 25-14, tying the match at 2-2.
In the decisive fifth set, Cincinnati stormed out to an 8-2 lead as the teams changed sides. The Bearcats remained in control and took the final set 15-7 and the match 3-2.
Balanced Attack
The Huskies may have fallen short, but their attack showed positive signs against a very strong Cincinnati defense. Three players recorded double digit kills on the afternoon, including Sophomore Kennadie Jake-Turner's season high 13 kills. Jake-Turner hit at a team-high .522 clip and added two digs. Fellow Sophomore Caylee Parker tallied 11 kills and added seven digs of her own. Freshman Jasmine Davis recorded 11 kills, hitting at .219 on the afternoon, and added two blocks and nine digs. R-Junior Genna Florig finished the afternoon with a team-high eight total blocks, adding four kills and two service aces. R-Sophomore Courtney Morris led the team with 44 assists and 13 digs, hitting at .333 on the afternoon.
