Huskies Win Thriller in Houston

HOUSTON, Texas – The UConn volleyball team defeated Houston (15-14, 9-5 American) in five sets on Sunday afternoon at the Fertitta Center. The Huskies (11-15, 5-9 American) win their second straight game and complete the weekend sweep.
Five-Set Thriller
The opening set was an exciting, tightly contested game to start. Houston jumped out to a 14-7 lead in set one before UConn scored four straight to close the gap. The Cougars maintained their advantage, forcing the Huskies to call timeout trailing 20-17. The Huskies would claw back, tying the game at 23 thanks to back to back service aces from Sophomore Anna Petrova. UConn would take a 1-0 lead with a 25-23 victory in the first set.
The second set began much like the first with the teams exchanging points. The Huskies opened a 9-4 lead, forcing Houston into an early timeout. The Cougars would fight back after the break and cut the Husky lead to 13-12. After several long rallies, the Huskies held a slight lead at 17-16. Houston rallied to take a 19-18 lead, but a 5-2 scoring run saw UConn claw back in front 23-21. The Huskies would go on to take a 2-0 lead in the match, winning the second set 25-23, courtesy of Freshman Jasmine Davis' 14th kill of the afternoon.
Houston took the lead early in set three and forced the Huskies to call timeout, trailing 12-8. The Cougars continued to roll and led 16-8 as UConn called another timeout. Houston went on to take the third set 25-15.
The Cougars got up 6-0 to start the fourth set, forcing UConn into an early timeout. Following the break, the Huskies cut into the Cougar lead, but trailed 13-8 at the midway mark of the set. After UConn used its second timeout trailing 16-9, Houston would lead 20-14 late in the set. The Huskies rallied, but fell 25-17, sending the match to a decisive fifth set.
The final set began with back and forth action with the game tied 4-4. The Cougars went on a 4-1 run to lead 8-5 as the teams switched sides. UConn rallied to tie the game at 9-9 with a service ace from sophomore Caylee Parker, forcing Houston to call timeout. The Huskies would take a 12-10 lead, forcing Houston into their last timeout. Jasmine Davis delivered the final kill as UConn took the fifth set 15-12, and the match 3-2.
Davis Leads the Way
Jasmine Davis had a career-high 22 kills on Sunday and recorded her fifth double-double of the season, adding a team-high18 digs, and hitting at .217, leading the Huskies to victory. Anna Petrova also had a career-high 18 kills, recording her second double-double of the season with 10 digs. Sophomore Kennadie Jake-Turner hit at .216, tallying 14 kills and adding four blocks. Freshman Madi Whitmire recorded a team-high 48 assists and tallied 12 digs. The UConn defense was also strong throughout the match, with six Huskies recorded double digit digs.
