Petrova Leads Huskies to Sweep of USF

STORRS, Conn. – Sophomore Anna Petrova recorded her third double-double of the season on Thursday night as the UConn volleyball team defeated USF in straight sets. Petrova tallied 13 kills and 13 digs, hitting at a .355 clip on the night.
The Huskies win their third straight game and improve to 12-15 on the year and 6-9 in American Conference play.
How Sweep It Is
The Huskies and Bulls began the first set exchanging points, as the teams were tied 6-6 early on. UConn opened the game, taking a 9-6 lead before the Bulls battled back to lead 10-9. After a few even rallies, the teams we tied again at 12-12. The Huskies jumped ahead 18-15, forcing a USF timeout. UConn would finish the set 25-20 and take a 1-0 lead in the match.
The second set started much like the first, with the teams tied early. Back to back service aces from Anna Petrova put the Huskies up 7-6 before they jumped ahead 13-10 at the midway mark of the set. The Bulls used a timeout trailing 17-12. Following the break, UConn went on to win the second set by a score of 25-20, taking a 2-0 lead in the match.
UConn jumped ahead 6-3 early in the third and final set and would push its lead to 11-6, forcing a USF timeout. The Huskies continued to bury the Bulls after the break, extending the lead to 15-8, the largest lead of the game. Leading 19-14 late, the Bulls took their final timeout. The Huskies would not be denied the sweep, as they held off a late USF rally to take the third set 25-20, and the match 3-0.
Finding A Rhythm
Following solid performances at Houston last weekend, Anna Petrova and freshman Jasmine Davis picked up right where they left off. Petrova, in addition to her double-double, added two more service aces on the night. Davis tallied 13 kills of her own, hitting .314, and adding 10 digs for her fifth double-double of the season and third consecutive double-double. Junior Ally Barrett also had another great performance, recording seven kills, hitting .286, three service aces, and a team-high 16 digs. Freshman Madi Whitmire led the team with 38 assists and added seven digs. Fellow Freshmen Mia Ruffolo and Aset Baker-Falealili added 12 and 10 digs respectively, totaling five Huskies with double digit digs on the night.

The Huskies host the UCF Knights in their final game of the season and final American Conference game on Saturday, November 16th at 12:00pm. Saturday's game will be senior day for the Huskies.
