STORRS, Conn. - The UConn baseball team (15-16, 2-2 BIG EAST) lost its series opener against Creighton (14-13, 1-0 BIG EAST), 3-1, on a cold afternoon at Elliot Ballpark.

LHP Charlie West took the tough luck loss for the Huskies with 7.0 innings of two-run ball that featured seven strikeouts.

UConn took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on an RBI double from Peyton Jemison. But the UConn offense was unable to capitalize on a few opportunties to get more runs.

After his double, Jemison was caught trying to steal third base with two outs and Rob Rispoli at the plate.

The Bluejays took the lead for good on a two-out, two-run single for Teddy Deters in the top of the fifth.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, Rispoli and Chris Polemeni delivered back-to-back singles with two outs. Freshman Cam Righi battled JT Adams with runners at the corners with foul ball after foul ball but was caught not looking at the pitcher at the eight-second mark of the pitch clock and was given a strike for an inning-ending strikeout.

In the seventh, Chris Cancel led off the inning with a hit by pitch. Jemsion attempted to get the runner over with a bunt but couldn't get the bunt down and struck out swinging. Rispoli followed with a base hit to right center to place runners at first and second. But the runners were left stranded after fly out and strikeout .

In the eighth inning, Nater Wachter reached on a two-out error and tried to steal second to get into scoring position but awkwardly slid into second base and was tagged out for the final out of the frame.

Creighton added an insurance run in the top of the ninth on a well-executed safety squeeze by Lew Rice to make it 3-1 Bluejays.

The Huskies and Bluejays will resume the series on Friday at 2:05 p.m.
