WSOC Posts Shutout Victory in Season Opener vs. Stony Brook

STORRS, Conn. - The UConn women's soccer team (1-0) won its season opener against Stony Brook, 1-0, on a steamy evening at Morrone Stadium.
The Huskies quickly jumped in front with the help of their two-time All-American Chioma Okafor. The senior captain tallied her 26th career goal at the 10:

Numerous Huskies made their UConn debuts on Sunday including goalkeeper Ava Yamas. The freshman from made her first career save in the 36th minute. The Franklin, Tenn. native made two saves and earned her first career shutout in the win.

Along with Yamas, six other Huskies made their debuts with Kaitlyn Richins and Ines Nourani earning starts on the backline. Maree-Anne Van Doesburg, Farrah Stephens-Martin, Tiana Righetti and Se-Hanna Mars all provided quality minutes off the bench.Â
The UConn defense was strong with just five shots allowed and zero corner kicks given up.Â
Offensively, the Huskies totaled 10 shots and earned six corner kicks with Alayna Taylor, Naia Ocio and Lexi Taylor each recording a pair of shots.Â
Next up, the Huskies head to the Lone Star state to take on Texas A&M in College Station on Saturday, August 23 at 9 p.m. ET / 8 p.m. CT.Â
