Lacrosse Drops Heartbreaker in Cambridge

CAMBRIDGE- The 23rd ranked UConn women's lacrosse team lost a heartbreaker in overtime on Wednesday night, falling on the road to the 24th ranked Harvard Crimson 13-12.
Quarter 1- UConn: 3, Harvard: 2
- Eliza Bowman set the tone early, getting UConn on the board first with her 10th goal of the season just under two minutes in.
- Harvard's Callie Batchelder tied the score up with a free position shot, converting for the Crimson despite being a player down
- Rayea Davis put the Huskies back in front with nine minutes left in the first quarter, with a rocket past the Crimson defense, her 17th goal of the season.
- After a yellow card on UConn's JoJo Gum, Harvard evened the scoring at 2 apiece, converting the free position shot
- Jenna Giardina dished out a perfectly timed assist to Bowman for her second goal of the first quarter, as the Huskies took a 3-2 lead into the second.
Quarter 2- Harvard: 8, UConn: 7
- Harvard continued to cash in on the free position shots, with Tori Balser converting to bring the hosts level at 3-all with 11:34 left in the quarter
- Hannah Shiels put the Crimson in front for their first lead of the night at 4-3
- Megan O'Brien responded right away, as the freshman scored her second goal of the season to again tie the game at 4-4.
- Kelsey Neary scored the first goal of her UConn career, as the road team wrestled back the lead at 5-4.
- Charlotte Hodgson scored two rapid goals for another lead change, creating a 6-5 Crimson lead.
- Two saves from Tori Cini, including one on a free position shot, kept Harvard at bay in the second.
- Karsyn Burnash found the back of the net, scoring off a feed from O'Brien to tie the table at 6.
- Ava Plata scored a woman-down goal for the Huskies, her seventh goal of the season to give UConn a brief lead, before Harvard tied the score again at 7-all.
- Another goal from Batchelder gave the Crimson the lead at the break.
Quarter 3- Harvard: 11, UConn: 9
- Batchelder fired the second half's opening salvo, her third goal of the night to extend the Harvard lead to 9-7.
- Stella Shea padded the lead for the hosts, converting a free-position shot as the Crimson went up 10-7.
- Eve McGrogan inched the Huskies closer, converting a woman-up goal to cut the Harvard lead to 10-8.
- Emma Dacey scored a goal with just over seven minutes left in the third to bring UConn within one
- Charley Meier rebuilt the multi-goal lead for the Crimson to stay in front 11-9.
Quarter 4- UConn: 12, Harvard: 12
- Bowman completed the hat-trick in the fourth, scoring a clutch goal after a nice find from Davis to get the Huskies within one again
- Burnash's second goal of the night continued the run for UConn, tying the score with 7:34 left in the fourth
- With just under two minutes left, Davis continued the heroics for the Huskies, with a go-ahead goal after a Harvard green card to give the visitors a late 12-11 lead.
- However, the Crimson would not go quietly into the night, tying the score at 12-all with just over a minute to play to send the game into overtime.
Overtime- Harvard: 13, UConn: 12
- A yellow card at the end of regulation immediately put the Huskies on the defensive, where Shea scored the game-winning goal in a wild seesaw affair etween the two-ranked opponents.
Up Next: UConn will look to bounce back on Saturday at home, welcoming in UMass at 1:00pm at Morrone Stadium.
