Softball powers past New Mexico and Hawaii

HONOLULU, Hawaii – UConn softball continued their momentum on Friday pushing their winning streak to four straight games. The Huskies beat New Mexico, 3-1 in game one and then followed with a 13-7 win over Hawaii.
Game One:
Payton Kinney got the nod in game one, making her fifth start of the season for the Huskies. She went 2.0 innings giving up one run on two hits, adding a strikeout.
UConn got off to a quick start in the top of the first inning off the bat of Grace Jenkins. She hit a two run home run to center field, her second of the season, putting the Huskies in front early.
New Mexico got on the board in the third inning, scoring a run trimming into the Huskies lead.
Meghan O'Neil came on in relief for Kinney in the third inning. She finished out the game in the circle tossing five scoreless innings, only giving up two hits with seven strikeouts, picking up her second win of the season.
The Huskies added an insurance run in the fifth inning as Lexi Hastings hit an infield single to score Haley Coupal from third base, making it 3-1 Huskies.
Game Two:
Hallie Siems made her tenth start of the season for the Huskies in game two. She went 5.0 innings giving up five runs on six hits with seven strikeouts, earning her fifth win of the season.
The Huskies offense was firing on all cylinders scoring runs in each of the first six innings.
UConn got on the board in the first inning, capitalizing on a Hawaii fielding error giving the Huskies a 1-0 lead. The Huskies doubled the lead in the second inning as Taylor Zatyk hit a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Kaitlyn Kibling from third base.
Hawaii scored three runs in the bottom of the second, putting the Huskies behind, 3-2.
UConn tied the game in the third inning off the bat of Jana Sanden. The senior hit a solo shot to left field, her fifth homer of the season.
The Huskies took the lead for good in the fourth inning, scoring four runs on five hits, putting UConn ahead 7-3. Zatyk got it started with a single to left field, scoring pinch runner Rayah Snyder from third base. Savannah Ring followed Zatyk with another single to left field, scoring Kibling from third base. Grace Jenkins brought in two more runs with a double down the right field line, scoring Zatyk and Ring.
Kibling added to the lead in the fifth inning with a solo homer to left center field, the first home run of her career, making it 8-3.
UConn had another big inning offensively in the sixth, scoring five runs on three hits. Grace Jenkins drove in her fifth run of the day with a double down the right field line, scoring Hastings from second base. Hope Jenkins delivered the big hit with a three run home run to center field, her third homer of the season, making it 13-5 Huskies.
Sydnee Koosh came on in relief for Siems in the sixth inning. She finished out the game in the circle for the Huskies tossing 2.0 innings giving up two runs on three hits with two strikeouts.
Hawaii got a run back in the sixth inning, making it 13-6 but UConn's lead proved to be too much for the Rainbow Warriors.

UConn returns to action tomorrow night against Cleveland State. First pitch is set for 6:00pm EST.
