HookC Wins Home Opener, 14-8

STORRS, Conn. - The UConn baseball team (8-11) won its home opener, 14-8, against the LIU Sharks on Wednesday afternoon at Elliot Ballpark.
The Huskies posted three crooked number innings including tying a season-high with a six-run second inning.Â
UConn trailed 5-0 entering the bottom of the second but loaded the bases with one out. Maddix Dalena walked with the bases loaded and Drew Kron drove in a run on a fielder's choice to move the deficit to 5-2.
After Ryan Daniels reached via walk to reload the bases, Paul Tammaro hit the first grand slam of the season for the Huskies to give UConn its first lead of the day 6-5.
Righthander Ian Cooke came out of the bullpen in the third and was solid for the Huskies. The New Milford, Conn. native earned the win with five innings of work and struck out eight.Â
Luke Broaadhurst helped give the Huskies a little breathing room with a three-run home run in the fifth, making it 11-6 Huskies.Â
Tommy Ellisen and Brady Afthim each tossed a scoreless inning to lock down the first win of the season at Elliot Ballpark.
Next up, the Huskies travel to Piscataway, N.J. to face off against Rutgers in a three-game series. The series is scheduled to begin Friday, March 22 at 4 p.m.
Game Notes
- Korey Morton registered three hits on Wednesday, he now leads the team with eight multi-hit games.
- Ian Cooke posted a season-high eight strikeouts on Wednesday out of the bullpen. The five-inning stint was the longest for Cooke since his six shutout innings against Louisville on Opening Day.
- UConn is now 51-9 all-time at Elliot Ballpark.
- Drew Kron drove in his first runs of the season with his two-run single in the eighth.Â
- The five-run deficit was the largest comeback the Huskies were able to complete this season. UConn trailed 12-3 to Cal and tied it 12-12 but ultimately lost that game 15-12.Â
