IRVINE, Calif. - The UConn baseball team (5-9) recorded its first shutout of the season against No. 22 UC Irvine, 5-0, on Wednesday night at Anteater Ballpark.Â
The Anteaters (13-2) entered the night scoring nearly 11 runs per game but it was the UConn pitching staff that held the potent offense to just two hits on the night.
Freshman Ben Schild dazzled in his first career start with a career-high six shutout innings that featured a career-high nine strikeouts. The RHP did not allow a hit until a two-out single by Caden Kendle ended a streak of 12-straight retired in the sixth.
The UConn offense broke a scoreless tie in the fifth with back-to-back hits from Tyler Minick and Caleb Shpur to open the frame. After missing a couple opportunities to lay down a sacrifice bunt, Ryan Daniels launched an 0-2 pitch over the right field fence for a three-run homer.
It was the third home run of the season for the sophomore and pushed his RBI total to team-leading 11 on the season.
Luke Broadhurst added a pair of runs with a bases loaded hit by pitch in the seventh and an RBI ground out in the ninth.
Stephen Quigley came out of the bullpen in place of Schild and fired two scoreless frames that ncluded a pair of strikeouts.Â
In a non-save situation, Brady Afthim closed out the victory by allowing a few base runners but eventually struck out the side to preserve the 5-0 win.
Next up, the Huskies wrap up their Spring Break trip with a three-game series at Cal Baptist.Â
