CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The University of Connecticut women's tennis team finished the ITA Northeast Regionals over the three-day singles and doubles tournament this weekend at Harvard with positive performances to look back on. The Huskies totaled six victories in a 20-team field.
The regional tournament features the top Division I players in the northeast region. For UConn four singles players and three doubles teams qualified for the tournament.
UConn collected four singles wins in a 128-player field. The Huskies were led by Aleksandra Karamyshev as Karamyshev advanced to the round of 32 after collecting two singles wins over Quinnipiac's Vera Sekerina (3-6, 6-1, 10-2) and Sacred Heart's Katsiaryna Starastsenka (6-3, 6-2). Victoria Matos also highlighted the singles side with a close third-set match in the round of 64 as Matos took on Boston College's Toli Glowacka after taking a 6-4, 6-1 win over Rhode Island's Valentina Cvackova. Matos fell short in three sets against Glowacka going 1-6, 6-3, 8-10.
On the doubles side, the Huskies posted two doubles wins against strong competition. The seeded doubles pair, Olivia Wright and Victoria Matos led the way as they would get the bye in the first round to advance to the round of 64. Wright and Matos put up a strong 8-5 win over Quinnipiac's Caitlin Flower and Caroline Schulson. Then, Wright and Matos took on a tough Syracuse doubles pair in Polina Kozyreva and Ines Fonte in the round of 32 and fell short 8-3.
"This was a great tournament with the top teams and players competing at Harvard," Director of Tennis Glenn Marshall said. "We qualified four singles players, and three doubles teams. Olivia earned a seed in singles, and Olivia and Victoria earned a seed in doubles. All six of our players who competed had a win on the weekend. We went 4-4 in singles, and Aleksandra led the way with a 2-1 record. Victoria and Maria also picked up solid singles wins as well. Even our losses were super competitive and close, with 5 of our 8 singles matches going 3 sets. Overall, a very good weekend of tennis against some of the top teams and players in the Northeast."
The Huskies look ahead to the Brown Invite as they travel to Providence, R.I., for three days on October 13-15.
