Huskies Conclude Season At Big East Championships

CAYCEE, South Carolina - The UConn women's tennis team concluded their season following a semi-final loss to no.1 seed Xavier in the BIG EAST Championships. The Huskies opened the tournament with a win over Georgetown.
UConn held off Georgetown, 4-2, and will meet Xavier in the tournament's penultimate match. The Huskies picked up the doubles point behind victories on the first and second court. The top tandem team of Chloe Lomans and Ela Platenikova overcame Ashley Kennedy and Paige Gilbert, 6-4. The second doubles duo, Victoria Matos and Madison McLeod, defeated Ruhika Bhat and Liya Chu, 6-4.
Victoria Matos extended UConn's lead at No. 4 singles, defeating Kennedy, 6-3, 6-2. Georgetown's Emily Novikov answered on the top singles court, surpassing Platenikova, 6-4, 6-0. Fellow Hoya Chu then leveled the score, 2-2, with a straight set victory over Lomans on the second court (6-4, 6-2).
UConn answered at No. 6 singles with a win from Isabella Asenov over Gilbert, 6-4, 6-4. Cameron Didion clinched the match at No. 3 singles, coming from behind to defeat Katie Garofolo-Ro, 2-6, 6-2, 6-4.
Following the win over Georgetown, the Huskies advanced to the semi-finals to face off against the no.1 seed Xavier. Xavier held off UConn, 4-3, to advance to the title match for the seventh consecutive season. The Musketeers picked up the doubles point with victories at No. 1 (Abby Nugent/ Clara Owen def. Chloe Lomans/ Ela Platenikova, 6-2) and No. 3 (Emily Flowers/Natalie Smitek def. Isabella Asenov/Cameron Didion, 6-1).
Xavier logged the first singles point with a win on the top court from Nugent (def. Platenikova, 6-2, 6-3). UConn answered at No. 2 singles behind a straight set victory from Chloe Lomans (def. Rexroat, 6-4, 7-5).
The Musketeers moved to 3-1 with a win on the fifth court from Owen over Madison McLeod (6-1, 4-6, 7-5). Despite going down 5-2 in the third set, Owen came from behind claim the decisive third frame, 7-5.
Victoria Matos countered for the Huskies, holding off Ellasyn Deford at No. 4 [7-6 (3), 0-6, 6-4]. Isabella Asenova leveled the score, 3-3, with a come-from-behind win at No. 6 singles (3-6, 6-3, 6-3).
Flowers clinched the match in Xavier's favor, rebounding to defeat Didion on the third court (2-6, 7-5, 6-4).
