Glenn Marshall will begin his 33rd year leading the UConn tennis program in 2024-25. Marshall was named the head coach of the Huskies’ men’s tennis program in 1992 and the Director of Tennis when he added the head coaching duties of the women’s program to his responsibilities in 1997.
Marshall coached both programs up until 2013 when the Huskies made the move into the American Athletic Conference, remaining the Director of Tennis and at the helm of just the women’s program. He has remained as the head coach of the women's team as UConn made the move back to the BIG EAST in 2020-21.
Under his leadership, the Huskies saw a program first in the spring of 2024, advancing to the BIG EAST semifinals for the first time. The Huskies finished the season with a 13-8 dual match record while junior Olivia Wright was an unanimous All-BIG EAST selection.
In 2021 the doubles team of Julieanne Bou and Leonie Hoppe also accomplished a program first, as they finished the season earning the program's first-ever ITA National Ranking. The duo closed out the year ranked No. 87 after combining for an 11-1 record together and leading UConn to a team doubles record of 29-9 for the spring. Bou also earned All-BIG EAST honors at the end of the season. In the spring of 2022, he guided the Huskies to their first BIG EAST postseason win since rejoining the league as they beat Villanova to advance to the quarterfinals of the tournament.
During UConn's time in the AAC, Marshall guided the Huskies to plenty of program “firsts”. Following the 2017-18 season, UConn achieved the program’s highest national ranking at No. 85 in the ITA National Team Rankings. In addition, a pair of Huskies earned the program’s first-ever ITA regional ranking as Yelyzaveta Pletnyeva was ranked 13th in singles play and along with Jacqueline Fitz-Randolph, were ranked seventh in doubles play.
Marshall helped guide Pletnyeva, who finished with an 88-30 career singles record, a .746 winning percentage, two two-straight appearances on the AAC All-Conference team. One of the highlights of her season was a run to the round of 16 at the ITA Northeast Regional Championship in the fall, the furthest any Husky has ever advanced in the prestigious tournament.
In 2015, UConn had their first All-AAC honoree as Srna Stosljevic garnered all-conference accolades after piling up 84 career singles wins. She was also the first Husky in program history to be seeded in the main draw at the ITA Regionals.
Off the court, Marshall was elected in 2017-18 to the Division I Northeast Regional Committee, responsible for helping to oversee regional rankings and championships.
In the classroom, Marshall’s Huskies continue to set a high standard among UConn’s athletic programs. In 2018, the men’s and women’s programs were honored with NCAA Public Recognition Awards for outstanding academic performance. The women's tennis program has been honored 12 consecutive times, while the men's tennis program was recognized for the seventh time and sixth-consecutive.
The Huskies have regularly been recognized as an ITA All-Academic Team, given annually to ITA programs that have a cumulative team grade point average of 3.20 or above (on a 4.00 scale). In addition, numerous UConn student-athletes in the tennis program have earned ITA Scholar-Athlete accolades.
In 2017, UConn’s Shea Flanagan was nominated for NCAA Woman of the Year as well as an NCAA Post Graduate Scholarship. While playing tennis, she was the winner of the American Athletic Conference’s Institutional Scholar-Athlete Postgraduate Scholarship and took part in the NCAA Career in Sports Forum.
In the community, Marshall’s tennis program has made it a priority to give back through community service a priority. His teams have participated with UConn Reach and Goal Line Student-Athlete mentorship and are also partnered with TEAM IMPACT.
During UConn’s tenure in the BIG EAST, Marshall served as president of the BIG EAST Tennis Coaches Association, elected by his peers in 2004. In this position, he represented the interests of all of the BIG EAST tennis programs and facilitated the development of new conference rules and all the details pertaining to the conference championships.
In the 2001 fall season, the women's tennis team captured the New England Championships that season. Individually, UConn took championships in five of the six singles brackets and two of the three doubles brackets at the New England Championships. He guided the men's team to four championships, including in his first year as head coach. In the spring of 1993, he led the Huskies to the New England Championship with men's tennis capturing the ECAC Championship title that fall (1993). UConn defended each crown the following season, winning the New England Championship and the ECAC titles the following spring and fall of 1994.
Off the court, Marshall has assisted in the research and development of tennis racquets for professional players at Bosworth International in Boca Raton, Fla. He serves as the Director of Tennis at the Old Lyme Country Club during the summer months. He and the staff at Madison instruct over 130 juniors and run an extensive adult program that includes USTA league play and lessons.
He attended Keene State College in New Hampshire for a year prior to transferring to the University of Connecticut in the fall of 1986. He was a three-year letterwinner with the men's tennis program at UConn, graduating in 1989 with a bachelor's of fine arts degree in music. Marshall was the top-singles and doubles player for the Huskies and was voted the team captain for the 1988-89 season. He completed his master's degree in sport management in 1993.
Marshall resides in his hometown of Glastonbury, Conn., with his wife, Carolyn, and their two children, Carter and Christine.
