MIAMI – The UConn baseball team (8-1) won its seventh game in a row with a 15-0 drubbing of FIU on Sunday afternoon at the FIU Baseball Stadium.
The Huskies secured their second consecutive road series sweep and outscored the Panthers 28-3 during the weekend set.
Starting pitcher Enzo Stefanoni (2-0) owned the Panthers with seven shutout innings, allowed two hits, zero walks and struck out a career-high 10 batters. The right-hander retired nine in a row on multiple occasions on Sunday.
The UConn offense broke out for a season-high 15 runs on 18 hits to push the Huskies record to 8-1 on the season. It is the best start for the team since starting 14-0 during the 1971 campaign.
Korey Morton made his first start of the weekend and registered his first career four-hit effort with a pair of doubles. Catcher Matt Donlan recorded four RBIs with an RBI double in the second and three-run long ball in the eighth. It was the second homer run of the season for the Guilford, Conn. native.
Ben Huber recorded his second three-hit game of the weekend while team captain Erik Stock extended his hitting streak to 20 games with a three-hit effort on Sunday.
Casey Dana and David Smith also registered multi-hit games to pace the UConn offense.
Game Notes
· The Huskies are 7-0 this season against teams from the state of Florida with three-game sweeps of FIU and UNF. UConn also beat USF on Opening Night.
· The seven-game win streak is the longest for the Huskies since their nine-game win streak towards the end of last season.
· Devin Kirby made his UConn debut with a scoreless ninth inning.
· Bryan Padilla's solo shot in the seventh inning was his first career home run.
· The two hits allowed by the UConn pitching staff is the lowest hit total allowed this season.
· Enzo Stefanoni has a 22:0 strikeout-to-walk ratio.
