Softball takes first two games of St. John's series

Queens, NY – UConn starts off conference play strong with two run rule wins over St. John's. Senior Reese Guevarra leads the way at the plate for the Huskies with six runs batted in on the day.
Meghan O'Neil got the start for game one of Friday's doubleheader. She pitched a strong five innings for the Huskies only letting up three hits and striking out three.
The Huskies got on the board early, scoring in the first inning on a single up the middle by Reese Guevarra, scoring Lexi Hastings. UConn would extend their lead in the third to 5-0. Hastings singled, scoring Aziah James. The Huskies hit back-to-back doubles scoring two more runs. Sanden would later come around to score on an error.
UConn would score two more in the fourth on a pair of hits by Hastings and Guevarra extending the UConn lead to 8-0.
Marybeth Olson would come in to close out the win for the Huskies in the sixth. She pitched one inning striking out two.
Olson got the nod in game two against the Red Storm. She pitched three shutdown innings striking out three and only surrendering two hits.
Guevarra opened the scoring for the Huskies with a homer to right field, her second on the year. This gave UConn a 1-0 lead.
Elise Sokolsky came in relief for Olson in the fourth. She went on to close out the win in game two.
The Huskies offense exploded for ten runs in the fifth. Sami Barnett and Erika Coreth both hit singles, scoring two runners apiece. Guevarra would once again deliver the big blow with a three-run single giving the Huskies a 11-0 lead. Game two would finish with a final of 11-1.
The Huskies will look to complete the series sweep on Sunday at 12:00pm.
