NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Sophomore Sydney Watson had four goals but UConn women's lacrosse (2-13) fell, 22-15, to Vanderbilt at Donald R. Dizney Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Senior Caitlin Leary notched a hat trick, the trio of Brooke Jensen, Olivia Miles and Lia LaPrise each allied two goals apiece, with Abby Vetsch and Anna Costello each adding one goal apiece, respectively, to round out the UConn goal scorers.
UConn was within striking distance of the Commodores early in the second half, trailing 11-8 after Lia LaPrise's goal at 28:27 of the frame made it a three goal game. After Vanderbilt opened up a 14-9 advantage, the Huskies battled back with a 4-1 run to pull themselves within two, 15-13, with 13:38 remaining.
But Vanderbilt closed the game on a 7-2 run to put the game out of reach for good.
Watson gave the Huskies an early lead, racing past her defender and then beating Vanderbilt goalkeeper Lily Argyle at 22:29 of the opening half to make it 2-1. After Vanderbilt knotted the score at two, the two teams swapped goals over the next 10 minutes of the high-scoring first period.
