Men’s Basketball Falls to Wichita State at the Buzzer, 65-63

WICHITA, Kan. – Back on the road to close out February, UConn men's basketball fell to Wichita State at the buzzer, 65-63, on Thursday night at Charles Koch Arena. UConn drops to 13-15 with the result, while Wichita State moves to 14-13.
Redshirt sophomore Alterique Gilbert led the Huskies with 18 points, while also finishing with four assists and three rebounds. Sophomore Josh Carlton also posted double figures with 10 points and tied Tarin Smith with a team-high five rebounds.
The Huskies and Shockers both got off to slow starts offensively, as both teams were a combined 5-for-23 to start the game. The home team held a 12-5 advantage with 10:58 remaining, but UConn closed the stanza on a 22-10 run, capped off by a left-wing triple from Brendan Adams to take a 27-22 lead into the intermission.
The Huskies carried their strong first half finish into the second, opening up a 37-27 lead after Alterique Gilbert came off a double screen and drained an off balance three pointer. Wichita State responded with a 22-9 run of its own to recapture the lead, 49-46, heading into the under eight timeout. Trailing by six late, Gilbert nailed back-to-back triples to tie the ball-game, 63-63, with seven seconds remaining. His late-game heroics weren't enough however, as the Shockers netted a fall-away jumper at the buzzer to snatch the victory.
Game Notes / Husky Highlights…
- Gilbert stuffed the statsheet with 18 points, four assists and three boards.
- Carlton added 10 and five rebounds.
- UConn knocked down 11 triples, finishing the game shooting 46 percent from beyond the arc.

UConn plays the first of two consecutive home games on Sunday, March 3, when the Huskies entertain USF at Gampel Pavilion, and will retire all-time great Ray Allen's number at halftime. The game is scheduled for a noon tipoff on CBS Sports Network.
