FAIRFIELD, Conn – It was a hard fought battle and a strong effort by the UConn women's lacrosse team (0-2) but the Huskies fell, 13-7, to Fairfield Wednesday afternoon at Conway Field at Rafferty Stadium.
Junior Olivia Myles recorded a hat trick (three goals) and sophomore Sydney Watson tallied two goals to pace the Huskies. Senior Caitlin Leary tallied two points on the afternoon (1g, 1a), while classmate Dani Dunn found the back of the net once. Sophomore goaltender Annie Carroll earned the start, posting 11 saves.
UConn opened up the game scoring with a goal from Sidney Watson at 27:35 to take an early 1-0 lead. Fairfield responded with four straight goals before Watson found the back of the net again – a free position goal – to end the home team's run and bring UConn within two. The home team pushed its lead back to four goals, but Olivia Miles and Caitlin Leary each tallied goals to bring the Huskies within three, 7-4, heading into the break.
After the Huskies closed the gap to one following back-to-back goals from Miles and senior Dani Dunn, Fairfield scored to stop its 30 minute scoring drought, then tacked on three more to open up a five goal advantage. Miles completed her hat trick to bring UConn within four, 11-7, but the Stags tallied two scores in the final six minutes to earn the result.
