Huskies Lose to Syracuse in Five Sets

Kline and Peterson Named to All-Tournament Team
STORRS, Conn. - The UConn volleyball team dropped a 3-2 decision to the Syracuse Orange in the final match of the 2018 UConn Challenge Saturday afternoon at Gampel Pavilion. The Huskies finished the weekend tournament 2-1 and are now 5-2 overall on the season.
UConn jumped up 2-0 in the match, winning the first set, 26-24, and the second, 25-18. The Huskies couldn't hold off the Orange who rebounded to post a 25-19 and 25-23 win in the third and fourth to force the deciding fifth set. UConn jumped out 2-0 in the fifth and was tied with SU at 4-4 before the Orange took control. Syracuse ran off seven-straight points to take control on the way to a 15-7 victory in the set and the match.
The Huskies got double double efforts from senior setter Emma Turner (Winter Park, Fla.) and freshman Caylee Parker (Windsor, Ontario). Turner dished out 51 assists and had 11 digs and three blocks while Parker turned in 18 kills and 10 digs, her third double double effort of the season. Senior Danielle Cabel (Bettendorf, Iowa) totaled 13 kills and just missed a double double with nine digs. She added five blocks. Â
On the weekend, UConn's Elizabeth Kline (Glenshaw, Pa.) and Isabelle Peterson (Gardnerville, Nev.) were named to the UConn Challenge All-Tournament team.
For Syracuse, Polina Shemanova led four players with double digit kills, posted 18 kills on her way to earning Tournament MVP honors. Ella Saada turned in 12 kills and had 11 digs in a double double effort.
The Huskies will return to action next weekend when they play three matches in the DePaul Invitational. UConn will face the host Blue Devils along with Florida Atlantic and Fort Wayne.
