Huskies Top Iona & UNH; Coach Grunwald Earns 100th Career Victory

Huskies play Syracuse to close weekend set on Saturday
STORRS, Conn. – The UConn volleyball team went 2-0 during Friday's UConn Challenge taking down both New Hampshire and Iona in four sets to improve to 5-1 on the season and run their winning streak to four-straight. In addition to nabbing a pair of wins, the Huskies also earned head coach Kris Grunwald his 100th career victory on Friday.Â
In the day's first match on Friday, the Huskies took down UNH in four sets for their fourth win on the season. UConn won the first two sets, 25-21 and 27-25 and after dropping the third, battled back in the fourth set for a 25-23 victory.
Senior Iman McGary (Rockford, Ill.) led the offensive attack with 15 kills while also coming up with six digs, two aces and three total blocks. Senior setter Emma Turner (Winter Park, Fla.) passed out 44 assists and had a season-high 18 digs. Â
Freshman Anna Petrova (Voronezh, Russia) came off the bench in the third and fourth set and chipped in eight kills while hitting .385 (8-3-13) and five digs. R-Sophomore Genne Florig (Portland, Ore.) had seven kills and seven blocks.
UNH had four players with double digit kills led by Gabri Olhava and Maddie Wiedenfeld who had 13 each. Hannah Petke had a double double with 11 kills and 11 digs while Molly Wotton chipped in 10 kills.
In the final match of the night, the Huskies took down Iona in four, 25-21, 25-23, 24-26, and 25-14. Freshman Caylee Parker (Windsor, Ontario) led the way with her second career double double, posting 16 kills and a season-high 16 digs in the win. She also had a pair of service aces and blocks.
Sophomore Isabelle Peterson (Gardnerville, Nev.) was in double digits in kills with 12 and hit .556 (12-2-18) in the match to go with six blocks.
Setter Emma Turners passed out 46 assists with 12 digs, two blocks and two aces.Â
The Iona tandem of Jamie Smith and Claire Archibald had double digit kills with 13 and 11, respectively.
The Huskies will close out their weekend on Saturday afternoon facing the Syracuse Orange in Gampel Pavilion.
