BURLINGTON, Vt. – Thanks to two late third period goals, the UConn women's hockey team was able to skate away with a 4-2 victory over the Catamounts to open Hockey East competition.
The Huskies dictated the pace of the first period, outshooting Vermont 12-8 in addition to being awarded three power play opportunities due to penalties committed by the Catamounts. Despite these advantages, both teams remained deadlocked at 0-0 at the end of the first.
The bulk of the second period remained a scoreless contest until the Huskies were able to take advantage of their fourth power play at the 16-minute mark. Senior captain Jaime Fox was the first to light the lamp for UConn after getting the feed from Tristyn Svetek and Viki Harkness and roaring the puck just out of reach of Melissa Black's reach, giving the Huskies a 1-0 lead.
A quick response goal by Saana Valkama (17:53) towards the end of the second, followed by a Lily Holmes goal midway through the third period (9:36) gave the Catamounts a 2-1 advantage. Unfortunately for Vermont, however, the Huskies would have the last laughs of the afternoon.
In the 11th minute, UConn was able to find the equalizer it needed – Capitalizing on a power play chance, Briana Colangelo found the back of the net off a pass from Natalie Snodgrass and Taylor Wabick. Taking advantage of another power play, Savannah Bouzide joined in on the scoring with a gino of her own in the 17th minute to put the Huskies back out in front, 3-2. With just under 20 seconds to go in the contest, Snodgrass tallied an empty net goal to put the game completely out of reach, and UConn left with a 4-2 victory.
"It was a hard fought game in a tough place to play," said Husky head coach Chris MacKenzie. "We are proud of our team for responding to adversity and coming out with the win. It was a great team effort."
