BURLINGTON, Vt. – The UConn women's hockey (3-1-0, 1-1 WHEA0 team suffered its first loss of the 2018-19 season, dropping a 5-3 decision against New Hampshire Friday night. The Huskies held a 62-36 shot advantage on the Wildcats, but were unable to capitalize on the three power play opportunities.
New Hampshire jumped out to an early 1-0 lead on a power play goal from Nicole Dunbar in the 12th minute of the first period. UConn immediately responded with back-to-back goals of its own within a two minute span.
Substituting an extra attacker for a goalie, Emily Reid delivered the equalizer for the Huskies off an assist from Rebecca Lindblad, ripping the puck through traffic and squeezing it past the UNH goalie. Just a minute later, Brianna Colangelo put the Huskies ahead 2-1 after scoring off a feed from Jaime Fox and Tristyn Svetek.
The Wildcats were able to even the score at two before the end of the first period as they capitalized on two UConn penalties.
New Hampshire extended its lead by two goals (4-2) after scoring goals in the 2nd (9:42, power play) and third (0:42) periods.
Trailing by two goals with little time remaining, UConn went back to a strategic but risky move that had been utilized in the first period. Again, the Huskies swapped out goalie Morgan Fisher for an extra attacker and the gamble paid off – initially.
UConn drew within one goal of UNH thanks to a goal from Rebecca Lindblad, who had subbed into the game as the extra attacker. After stopping the Wildcat attack, the Huskies raced down searching for the tying goal, but were unable to capitalize on their attempts near the net.
An empty net goal from New Hampshire sealed the game and ended any chance of the contest going into overtime.
