UConn Upended by No. 17 Stanford Saturday

STANFORD, Calif. - After a solid start for the Huskies, UConn was stumped by No. 17 Stanford 19-14 on Saturday at Laird Q. Cagan Stadium. Senior Jacqueline Jordan (Los Gatos, Calif.) and junior Grace Nolan (Marcellus, N.Y.) both led the way with four goals apiece, but Nolan finished on top with six total points, Jordan had five.
UConn falls to 2-4 on the season as the Huskies continue their California tour with the Cal Bears on Tuesday. Stanford extends its win streak to five games and improves to 6-2 overall.
Freshman goalkeeper Grace Beshlian (Wantagh, N.Y.) tied her career-best 14 saves against the Cardinal on Saturday. This marked the second-straight game, fourth overall this season, that Beshlian finished with double-digit save totals.
After Stanford scored off a free position 19 seconds in to take a 1-0 lead, junior Kelsey Catalano (Stony Brook, N.Y.) tied up 30 seconds later to even the score 1-1 less than a minute into the game.
UConn outscored Stanford 6-2 over a 15 minute span following the two initial goals in the first minute. The Huskies held the largest lead of the first half with 12:54 remaining when they led by four goals, 7-3. Jordan had a hat trick within the first 17 minutes of the game.
The tables turned in the last 10 minutes of the first half when Stanford outscored UConn 6-1 to take a 9-8 lead into the halftime break. UConn closed out the first half on a 9:16 scoring drought.
Sophomore Brooke Jensen (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y.) snapped UConn's 10 minute scoring drought 1:02 into the second half after Stanford opened the second half scoring.
With Stanford up 12-9, Nolan tacked up her third goal for a hat trick followed by a tally from freshman Olivia Shapiro (Longmeadow, Mass.), her third goal of the season.
Nolan and Jordan both notched their fourth goals of the day in the last 15 minutes of the game, consistently keeping Stanford's lead within two scores.
Stanford scored four goals over the final 12 minutes to secure the win. The Cardinal almost held UConn scoreless through those final minutes, but freshman Olivia Miles (Watertown, N.Y.) scored with two minutes to go in a last effort for UConn.
