Huskies Prepare For BIG EAST Quarterfinals At Notre Dame

BIG EAST Quartefinals Game Notes in PDF Format
After defeating Louisville, 3-0, in Storrs on Thursday afternoon, the UConn women's soccer team will travel to South Bend, Ind. to face top-seeded Notre Dame in the BIG EAST Tournament Quarterfinals. The game is set for 1 p.m. at Alumni Stadium on the campus of Notre Dame. Fans can watch the game, free of charge, through the Notre Dame website (www.und.com). UConn will look for its first victory at Notre Dame on Sunday since the first meeting between the schools in 1995. The Huskies were victorious in that initial meeting, 5-4, in overtime. All-time, UConn stands at 4-20-4 against the Irish.
Saturday's game will mark the 13th postseason meeting and the 10th BIG EAST Tournament game in the all-time series. The two programs have competed for the BIG EAST Championship nine times with Notre Dame claiming all nine except for UConn's 2-1 victory in Storrs in 2004.
In the last meeting, UConn tied Notre Dame, 1-1, in Storrs on October 15. In that game, sophomore Linda Ruutu (Espoo, Finland) put home the game-tying goal with a 20-yard free kick in the 88th minute.
UConn comes into the game with a 9-8-3 record after dismantling Louisville, 3-0, on Thursday. The Huskies are led on offense by graduate student Angelika Johansson (Falkenberg, Sweden) and junior Jessica Shufelt (Rochester, N.Y.). Johansson leads the team with seven goals. Shufelt, with her game-winning goal against Louisville on Thursday, sits in second with six goals. The two players are tied for the team lead with 15 points.
Junior Jessica Dulski (Pittsford, N.Y.) has started every game in goal for the Huskies. She's recorded four shutouts and boasts a 1.03 goals against average and a .781 save percentage. Dulski has stopped 75 shots this season in 20 games.
Notre Dame owns a 15-1-2 record and a No. 3/5 ranking in the national polls. The Irish possess the most potent offense in the league at 2.22 goals per game while also representing the tightest defense in the BIG EAST with a 0.56 goals against average. Notre Dame is led offensively by junior Melissa Henderson and her 14 goals, seven assists and 35 points. Henderson leads the BIG EAST in goals and points.
In goal for Notre Dame is senior Nikki Weiss. Weiss, a native of Redding, Conn., has started every game for Notre Dame. She's posted seven shutouts on the season while denying 63 shots. She currently owns a 0.51 goals against average and a .875 save percentage.
The winner of Sunday's contest will head to Piscataway, N.J. for the BIG EAST Semifinals and Finals held on the campus of Rutgers University. The semifinals will take place on Friday, November 5 at 5 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. The finals are set for 12 p.m. on Sunday, November 7.
