Huskies Fall at No. 23 West Virginia, 3-0

Storrs, Conn. - The University of Connecticut women's soccer team traveled to Morgantown, W. Va. and fell to the No. 23 Mountaineers, 3-0. The Huskies (8-7-3, 4-4-2 BIG EAST) finished the game with 15 shots, including six on goal, while West Virginia (12-4-1, 8-1-1 BIG EAST) recorded eight shots, including five on frame.
The Huskies outshot West Virginia, 15-6, and held the advantage in corners 5-3, but the Mountaineers capitalized on their chances to remain in second place in the BIG EAST American Division. With the loss, UConn falls to fourth in the standings.
West Virginia opened the scoring just three minutes into the contest. Caroline Szwed headed home her second goal of the season after a free kick from Bry McCarthy. UConn outshot the Mountaineers, 5-4, in the opening 45 minutes but the lone Husky shot on frame from freshman Devin Prendergast (Babylon, N.Y.) was saved by WVU goalkeeper Kerri Butler.
WVU doubled its lead in the 53rd minute when Blake Miller volleyed a shot off the right post and in. Szwed earned the assist on the play.
Connecticut nearly closed the gap in the 59th minute but senior Erin Clark's (Somers, Conn.) shot hit off the post and was cleared away from danger. The Huskies missed another golden opportunity in the 64th minute when Butler denied senior Meghan Cunningham (Simsbury, Conn.) on a breakaway.
With UConn pushing for its first goal of the game, the Mountaineers finished the scoring in the 86th minute with a goal from Emily Dillon. Dillon buried her chance from seven yards out on a cross from Blake Miller.
Connecticut outshot West Virginia, 10-4, in the second half but Butler came up with five stops to keep the Mountaineers ahead.
The Huskies will now travel to Pittsburgh for a 1 p.m. contest on Sunday, October 24 to close out the regular season.
