Storrs, Conn. - The University of Connecticut women's soccer team closed out the regular season with a 1-0 loss at the hands of Pittsburgh today in Pittsburgh, Pa. With the loss, UConn sees its overall record become 8-8-3 (4-5-2 BIG EAST) while Pittsburgh played itself into the BIG EAST Tournament and improves to 7-10-2 (4-6-1 BIG EAST). With the action around the league, UConn finishes in fourth place in the BIG EAST American Division and will host the fifth-place team from the National Division, Louisville. The game will take place on Thursday, October 28 at 3 p.m. at Joseph J. Morrone Stadium.
Connecticut fell behind at 29:33 of the first half. Pittsburgh's Liz Carroll sent in a corner that Katelyn Ruhe controlled from 18 yards out and finished to put Pittsburgh ahead for good.
Although UConn outshot the Panthers, 6-2, in the first half and 8-3 in the second half, the Huskies were unable to beat Pittsburgh goalkeeper Morie Kephart. Kephart finished the day with seven saves.
Connecticut's best chance came in the 78th minute when senior Elise Fugowski (Stockholm, N.J.) fired a shot off the cross bar following a Linda Ruutu (Espoo, Finland) corner kick.
The Huskies limited Pittsburgh to just three shots on frame in 90 minutes. Junior goalkeeper Jessica Dulski (Pittsford, N.Y.) made two saves on the day.
While the Huskies came away with a 0-2 record this weekend (UConn lost at WVU, 3-0, on Friday night), UConn still earned a first-round home game in the BIG EAST Tournament. UConn will host Louisville on Thursday, October 28 at 3 p.m. at Joseph J. Morrone Stadium in Storrs, Conn.
UConn and Louisville have faced off on just two occasions in program history. The Huskies tied the Cardinals, 1-1, in Louisville back in 2008. In the first meeting all-time between the two programs, UConn defeated Louisville, 2-1, in Storrs in 2005. The winner of the first-round match will travel to South Bend, Ind. to face No. 1 seeded Notre Dame on Sunday, October 31. The time of that contest is still to be determined. UConn and Notre Dame played to a 1-1 tie in Storrs on October 15.
