STORRS, Conn. (September 3, 2008) - First-year University of Connecticut women's lacrosse head coach Angela McMahon has named Melynda Zwick an assistant coach effective Monday. Zwick enters her first year as an assistant lacrosse coach at the University of Connecticut after playing for four years at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
"I am very excited about the addition of Melynda to our staff,” said McMahon. “She will be a valuable asset to our team both on and off the field. Melynda is a great role model and knows what it takes to build a program."
While at UMass, Zwick led her team to two Atlantic 10 tournament appearances. During her senior year, she captained her team to the finals game of the A10 tournament. Over her career she tallied 100 total points on 60 goals and 40 assists compiling 11 multi-goal games, 17 multi-point games and five hat tricks. During her junior and senior years she ranked second on her team in points as well as the third leading scorer.
"I am very excited to take on the role as assistant women's lacrosse coach here at the University of Connecticut;” said Zwick. “The programs here at UConn are some of the best in the nation and I am proud to be a part of the tradition. Being part of this coaching staff is a great opportunity for me and I am fortunate being back on the field with Coach McMahon after learning so much from her over the last two years when she was my coach at UMass. She has an amazing mind for the game and I look forward to working with her and Coach Wagner in the upcoming season."
Throughout college during the summer, Zwick also worked at a variety of camps. Last summer, she worked under Kelly Amonte at the Northwestern lacrosse camps with McMahon. She also served as a first assistant to the camp director at the Nike Lacrosse Camp in Lawrenceville, N.J. where she planned activities, set up a daily schedule for all of the campers, and provided guidance for participants aged 8-17 for the last three years. In her home state of Pennsylvania, Zwick assisted at numerous high school camps as an assistant camp director for the last six years and worked at the 180 Lacrosse School in Amherst, Mass over the last two summers.
Zwick recently graduated from UMass Amherst with a Bachelor of Science degree in natural science of geology, earth track.
