Labbe also garners NSCAA/adidas All-Northeast Region Honors
STORRS, Conn. (December 17, 2008) – Five University of Connecticut women’s soccer team members have been named to the New England Women's Intercollegiate Soccer Association (NEWISA) All-New England team. Senior Stephanie Labbe (Stony Plain, Alberta) was named to the First Team and junior Lauren Ebert (Hillsborough, N.J.), senior Elizabeth Eng (Chicago, Ill.), sophomore Kacey Richards (Williamstown, N.J.), and senior Brittany Tegeler (Baldwin, Md.) were all named to the Second Team. Labbe was also named to the NSCAA/adidas All-Northeast Region Third Team.
Labbe recorded a 1.02 GAA and 116 saves in over 2,034 minutes in goal. She tallied six shutouts over 21 games including five in 11 league contests. Labbe led the BIG EAST in saves with her 116. She also led the BIG EAST in save percentage in conference play with an outstanding .877. Labbe held Notre Dame to no goals during regulation in their BIG EAST Championship match, the only goalie to hold the Fighting Irish to zero goals in regulation during the entire year.
Ebert and Richards anchored the UConn defense. Ebert played in 18 games on the season sitting out a few due to injury. With other injuries to Jessica Diakun and Brittany Taylor, Ebert quickly became the most experienced defender for the Huskies, and she filled her role well.
Richards played in every game during the year for the Huskies averaging 89.5 minutes a game. She had one goal and one assist on the season, each coming in BIG EAST play but her defense at the midfield was outstanding.
On the other hand, Eng and Tegeler were UConn’s offensive anchors. Eng played in all 22 games on the season for UConn starting in 16 of them. She tallied one goal and two assists on the season all coming in BIG EAST play. Her play off of the ball allowed UConn to come back during the second half of their season and advance to the BIG EAST finals.
Tegeler was another contributing factor to UConn’s postseason run. She racked up five goals during the season, once again with all of them coming during BIG EAST play. Tegeler scored her first goal of the year in a comeback attempt against Cincinnati. She then tallied her next two goals in a win over Pitt. Tegeler’s biggest goal of the year was against St. John’s. Her goal, and the lone UConn one during the game, helped the Huskies to a 1-1 tie and propelled them into third place in the conference, one point higher than St. John’s setting off their postseason run.
