SOUTH BEND, Ind. - At the start of the second half, the only blemish on the board was a penalty kick goal for the Gators, but by the final buzzer, Florida had tacked on four more to shutout the University of Connecticut women's soccer team, 5-0.
It began simply enough, UConn's Alisse Kosloski (Wernersville, Pa.) went up for a header against the Gators' Ameera Abdullah and drew a foul. This allowed for Keleigh Hudson to take a penalty kick against Husky goalkeeper, freshman Stephanie Labbe (Stony Plain, Alberta). The ball went to the right of Labbe, and the Gators had their first goal. Until that point, the Huskies had been solid on both defense and offense, staying even with the Gators. The Huskies had taken three shots and Labbe made one save. Florida recorded six shots and also had one save in the first half.
It was not until the second half that the Huskies' game seemed to come apart. The Gators scored four more goals against Labbe. The first goal of the half was scored by Cherry Pickman, at the 58:18 mark, off a loose ball in front of the net. Florida's Kelli Eisenbrown threw the ball in from the right side to Jasmine Johnson. Johnson headed the ball toward the goal, but the shot was blocked by Labbe. The ball came loose and Pickman took advantage of the open net to score Florida's second goal of the game.
Six and a half minutes later, another scramble in front of the Huskies' net led to a Gator goal. Florida's Melanie Booth took a shot on goal that was saved by Labbe, but Johnson rebounded the ball with a header that sent the ball into the back of the net for the team's third goal.
For the Huskies, freshman Brittany Taylor (Campbell Hall, N.Y.) fought hard in the forward position. She had four shot opportunities that were denied by an offsides call by the referees. She took two of the team's seven shots on goal in the minutes between Florida's third and fourth goal. Her first attempt was wide and he second was saved by the Gators' goalkeeper Jen Gardner.
Florida's fourth goal was unassisted by Katie Green. Jessica Young took the corner kick for the Gators and connected with Ananda Erickson, who headed the ball toward the goal. Labbe made the save, but Green came up with the rebound at the corner and drove the ball into the net.
The final Gator goal came with just 4:57 remaining in the game. Florida's Lindsey DeLorenze blasted the ball over Labbe's head from outside the box. The shot looked as if it were going to be deflected by the crossbar, but it skimmed under it instead and slid down the back of the net to bring Florida's goal total to five.
UConn's offense was led by Taylor and freshman Elizabeth Eng (Chicago, Ill.), who each had four shots. Senior Kristi Lefebvre (Colchester, Vt.) had three shots for the Huskies and did well to break-up the Gator's run through midfield throughout the game.
For their efforts in the tournament, Taylor and Eng were named to the Inn at St. Mary's Soccer Classic All-Tournament team.
The Huskies split the series 1-1 this weekend in the Inn at St. Mary's Soccer Classic. The team will be back in tournament action next weekend at home in the UConn Classic on Sept. 9 and 11. Sept. 9 will be high school night at Morrone Stadium. High school teams that register more than 15 people will get in for free. On Sept. 11, the Huskies will be hosting a pre-game youth soccerfest.
