STORRS, Conn. (September 30, 2005) - The University of Connecticut women's soccer team wasted no time in defeating BIG EAST newcomer Cincinnati, 3-0, at Morrone Stadium Friday night. The Huskies were led by freshman Brittany Tegeler (Baldwin, M.D.), who had two goals in the game, as well as an assist. This victory improves UConn's record to 8-2-1 overall and 4-0-0 in the BIG EAST.
The Huskies jumped on the board early with Tegeler scoring her third career goal at the 6:47 mark of the game, unassisted, after a corner kick by senior Jennifer Sullivan (Stonington, Conn.). Just under 10 minutes later, Tegeler was once again involved in scoring with a cross to fellow freshman Brittany Taylor (Campbell Hall, N.Y.) who found the back of the net for the Huskies, recording her fifth goal of the season.
Going into half time, the Huskies led 2-0, out-shooting the Bearcats, 6-1. The second half was similar to the first with nine assaults on Cincinnati's defense, but scoring on just one of them. Tegeler took a shot from 25 yards out that bounced off the hands of Cincinnati goalie, Sherry Slye, before dribbling into the net. The score would remain at 3-0 for the rest of the game. The Bearcats recorded just one shot in the second half, giving them a total of two for the evening as compared to 15 by Connecticut.
The Huskies will be home again on Sunday, Oct. 2, against Louisville on UConn Alumni Day at Morrone Stadium. The game is slated to begin at noon with a half time presentation for the alumni. Sunday is also Soccer Clinic Day. Youths 13 and younger have the opportunity to learn from the Huskies in a pregame clinic taught by the women's soccer players and coaching staff.
