TAMPA, Fla. (September 25, 2005) - The University of Connecticut women's soccer team extends its winning streak to three straight games with a 1-0 overtime victory over USF on Sunday afternoon. In the ninth minute of overtime, freshman Brittany Taylor (Campbell Hall, N.Y.) found herself in front of an open net and scored the game-winning goal for the Huskies.
UConn dominated on offense as well as defense in its first game against the BIG EAST newcomer, USF. In the first half, the Huskies took 11 shots on the Bulls' defense. They had a scoring opportunity midway through the first stanza when they were awarded a penalty shot. Redshirt sophomore Meghan Schnur (Butler, Pa.) took the shot for the Huskies, but the Bulls' goalie, Casey Garrett, anticipated the shot and saved the ball as it went to her right.
In the second half, the Huskies tacked on eight more shots, but were still unable to penetrate USF's defense. The Bulls' offense was also kept at bay as they were allowed only one shot in the stanza. With both team still scoreless after 90 minutes, the game went into overtime.
UConn took five more shots in overtime before Taylor found the back of the net. Senior Kristi Lefebvre (Colchester, Vt.) headed the ball over USF's defensive line and found freshman Brittany Tegeler (Baldwin, M.D.) open. Tegeler took a shot, but it was deflected by Garrett. The rebounded ball found Taylor in front of the goal with the Garrett out of position, she took the shot from 15 yards out to win the game for the Huskies.
The Huskies will be back on the field Friday night against Cincinnati at 7:00 p.m. at Joseph J. Morrone Stadium on the Storrs campus.
