STORRS, CT (December 7) — University of Connecticut women’s soccer team members Casey Zimny (Rochester, NY) and Alexa Borisjuk (North Haven, CT) each became first-time Collegiate All-Americans, as announced on Thursday in Mission, KS. Zimny was named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/adidas All-America First Team and Borisjuk to the All-America Second Team.
Zimny and Borisjuk, both senior co-captains, join a long list of UConn players with All-America credentials. The two become the 21st and 22nd Huskies to have been named All-Americans, a group that has combined for 38 All-America selections. Since Tara Buckley became the first UConn All-American in 1980, Connecticut has landed at least one player in the elite group every year except 1986.
Zimny, the 2001 BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year and member of the All-BIG EAST First Team, anchored a defense that gave up 0.7 goals a game and recorded 13 shutouts. Her lone goal of the season came in UConn’s 3-1 win over No. 4 Notre Dame on Oct. 21, giving her seven goals in her career. A four-year starter, Zimny started in 96 games and stands tied for sixth in the UConn record books for games played with 98.
Borisjuk, a midfielder, notched a career-best seven goals in 2001 and added a team-best seven assists for 21 points. Those totals, which ranked her second in scoring on the team, also earned her a spot on the 2001 All-BIG EAST First Team. In 93 career games, Borisjuk recorded 17 goals and 18 assists for 52 points.
Connecticut ended the season with an 18-6-0 overall record and 5-1-0 in the BIG EAST Conference. UConn won its third straight BIG EAST Northeast Division regular season title and advanced to the semifinals of the conference tournament before falling to West Virginia, 1-0. Head coach Len Tsantiris led the Huskies to their 20th consecutive NCAA Tournament berth and advanced to the "Sweet 16" before being knocked off by Penn State, 2-0.
