Huskies prepare for a BIG EAST Championship run

STORRS, CT (November 2) - The No. 9 Connecticut women's soccer team closed out the regular season on Nov. 1 with a 2-1 win over Yale, giving the Huskies a 15-4-0 overall record and seven straight wins going into the 2001 BIG EAST Championship.
The Huskies will host Villanova in the championship's quarterfinals on Sunday, Nov. 4 at Morrone Stadium. UConn will enter the contest as the No. 1 seed in the Northeast Division of the BIG EAST Conference, and Villanova enters the game as the No. 4 seed in the Mid-Atlantic Division. Kickoff is scheduled for noon.
UConn will have its hands full with the Wildcats, who lead the BIG EAST in nearly every statistical category. Villanova comes into the game ranked among the leaders in the BIG EAST in almost every statistical category. The Wildcats have the conference’s highest assists total (52), the lowest goals against average (0.59) and are tied with the Huskies for most shutouts (10). They also finished among the leaders in goals scored this season with 43 in 19 games.
UConn has played Villanova 12 times since the series began in 1983, and the Huskies are undefeated with an 11-0-1 record. The two teams have met three times in the conference tournament, with the Huskies getting the better of the Wildcats each time and outscoring them by a combined 11-1 margin. Villanova last met UConn in the tournament in 1998, a game the Huskies won 5-0.
Freshman Kristen Graczyk leads the Huskies with nine goals and three assists for 21 points, including three game winners. Senior Alexa Borisjuk has 18 points this season on six goals and a team-high six assists, and senior goalkeeper Shanna Caldwell is undefeated in seven starts and sports a 0.25 goals against average.
Junior Quinn Sellers leads the Wildcats with 22 points, having netted 10 goals and added two assists this season. Freshman Laura Johnson has also provided some offensive punch, pitching in with seven goals and four assists for 18 points. Senior goalkeeper Janel Schillig has seen the majority of minutes in net, allowing nine goals in 1,378 minutes for a 0.59 goals against average.
