STORRS, CT (November 1) – The No. 9 University of Connecticut women’s soccer team closed out its regular season with its seventh straight win, a 2-1 decision over Yale University at Morrone Stadium on Thursday night. The Huskies avenged their 1-0 loss to Yale from last season, improving their record to 15-4-0 overall. The Bulldogs’ record dropped to 5-8-2 overall.
UConn senior Mary-Beth Bowie (Dartmouth, Nova Scotia) put the Huskies on the board first at the 30:02 mark. A ball sent into the box deflected off a Yale defender and came to Bowie on a bounce to the left of the goal. She left-footed the ball as it came down and chipped it over Yale goalkeeper Lindsay Sabel into the top-right corner of the net for her third goal of the season.
Freshman Kristen Graczyk (Albuquerque, NM) gave Connecticut the 2-0 lead twenty minutes into the second half on her team-leading ninth goal of the season. After the goal, Yale’s Ali Cobbett passed the ball forward off the restart at midfield. Chandra King took the pass and slipped past the UConn defense to score the Bulldogs’ lone goal of the game only six seconds after UConn’s score.
Connecticut senior Shanna Caldwell (Williamsburg, VA) was not forced to make a save in net, while Sabel recorded five saves. UConn outshot Yale 14-3 and had a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks.
UConn will next host Villanova on Sunday, November 4 in the quarterfinals of the 2001 BIG EAST Championship at Morrone Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for noon. The Huskies are the No. 1 Northeast seed while the Wildcats are the No. 4 Mid-Atlantic seed. The winner will advance to the semifinals in Piscataway, NJ on November 9.
