STORRS, Conn. - Kristin Gardiner, a junior back on the nationally-ranked University of Connecticut women's soccer team, has been named one of the initial recipients of the Connecticut Innovations Technology Scholar Awards program.
Gardiner, a junior and a product of E. O. Smith High School in Storrs, is a third year Honors student at UConn majoring in Chemical Engineering.
A total of 40 scholars from colleges and universities across Connecticut were selected for the initial Connecticut Innovations Technology Scholar Awards program, which were announced by Connecticut Governor John G. Rowland. The program combines earned scholarships, internships, and leadership training to support Connecticut's science and technology-based workforce needs. Each scholar is eligible for up to $12,000 in earned scholarships, while working toward their undergraduate degree. Of the 40 scholars honored, 20 were University of Connecticut students, with Gardiner being one of 13 UConn award winners who are members of the school's Honors Program.
Gardiner is a three-year varsity letter winner in women's soccer at Connecticut. She has played in 75 of UConn's 76 matches during the past three seasons, starting in the backfield in 48 of those contests. In her three seasons with the Husky women's soccer program, Connecticut has posted an impressive overall record of 55-17-4, advancing to the NCAA National Quarterfinals all three years.
