SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The UConn baseball team (28-22, 11-5 BIG EAST) rallied for a 4-3 victory in its series opener at Seton Hall (15-26, 2-14 BIG EAST) on Friday evening at Owen T Carroll Field at Mike Sheppard Stadium.
The Huskies came back from multiple deficits on Friday to secure their fifth-straight BIG EAST victory. Trailing 1-0 going to the fourth inning, sophomore Jackson Marshall hit his team-leading 14th home run of the season, a 420 foot blast to left center field to tie the game at 1-1.Â
Seton Hall responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the 4th inning to reclaim the lead, 3-1, but with second and third and one out, UConn starter Charlie West buckled down and registered back-to-back strikeouts to keep the deficit at two.Â
UConn immediately responded in the fifth with a pair of runs to even the score. Peyton Jemison led off the frame with a single and moved to second after Chris Cancel was hit by a pitch. Chase Taylor came to the plate and laid a sacrifice bunt down third base line. The third baseman picked up the bunt and fired to first but an errant throw allowed Taylor to reach and Jemison to come around to score.Â
After a strikeout, Rob Rispoli recorded an RBI ground out to short to make it a 3-3 game.Â
The game remained tied until the top of the seventh. Cancel drew a one-out walk and junior captain Tyler Minick, who is battling an injury that limits him swinging the bat, entered as a pinch runner. Minick immediately swiped second and advanced to third on the throw that skipped into center. Minick then scored the go-ahead run on a close play at the plate on a Chase Taylor safety squeeze to make it 4-3.
Meyers closed out the victory with his sixth save of the season with 3.0 scoreless innings.
The series resumes on Saturday, May 9 with an updated game time of 4 p.m. due to expected inclement weather earlier in the day.
