STORRS, Conn. -Â Â The reigning BIG EAST Tournament Champions and No. 4 seed UConn softball team (31-26) will face the host school and No. 1 seed Texas A&M Aggies (36-17) in the opening round of the College Station Regional on Friday, May 15 at Davis Diamond. First pitch is set for at 2:00pm EST on ESPN2.
The regional also features the No. 2 seed Arizona State Sun Devils (41-16) and No. 3 seed McNeese Cowgirls (40-20). Â
UConn will be making consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances for the first time since 1995 and 1996. It will mark the Huskies 10th NCAA Tournament appearance in program history. UConn holds an 11-19 all-time record in the tournament.
UConn is coming off their second straight BIG EAST Tournament Championship a week ago, defeating Creighton 8-3 in a winner-take-all game seven. The Huskies run in the conference tournament pushed them past the 30-win mark for the fifth consecutive season under head coach Laura Valentino, a feat that has never been done before in the program's 51-year history.Â
On offense, UConn has five hitters batting above .300 this season in Cat Petteys (.397), Savannah Ring (.342), Emma Willers (.306), Kaitlyn Breslin (.305), and Ava Calciano (.302). Three of those five Huskies are underclassmen in Petteys, Willers, and Calciano. UConn has surpassed the single season program records for doubles (94), and walks (240). The Huskies 240 walks this season ranks 15th in Division I.Â
In the circle, UConn has posted a 4.21 era, logging 267 strikeouts. Jessica Walter and Caprice Bohmer have led the Huskies staff this season, pitching in 243 of UConn's 364.1 innings. Walter and Bohmer each earned All-BIG EAST nods for the first time in their careers.Â
A Look at Texas A&M
The overall No. 15 seed Texas A&M Aggies (36-17) are hosting their third consecutive regional and are making their 24thstraight NCAA Tournament appearance. Texas A&M finished in sixth place in the SEC with a 16-8 conference record. The Aggies are coming off a loss to Auburn in the SEC Tournament second round, 11-8. Texas A&M has posted an impressive 21-5 record at home this season. The Aggies are led by Trisha Ford coaching in her fourth season in College Station. Texas A&M garnered four All-SEC selections, highlighted by first teamers Mya Perez and Kennedy Powell.Â
Series History
This will be the seventh all-time meeting between the Huskies and Aggies on the diamond. Texas A&M leads the all-time series, 6-1. UConn's lone win in the series came during the 2018 season when the Huskie upset the then No. 7 Aggies at the Aggies Softball Complex, 6-1.Â
