COLLEGE STATION, Texas – In the opening round of the College Station Regional on Friday afternoon, the No. 4 seed UConn softball team lost to the No. 1 seed Texas A&M Aggies, 17-3 in five innings at Davis Diamond. The Huskies move to the loser's bracket of the College Station Regional.
Freshman Caprice Bohmer made her first career start in the NCAA Tournament, marking her 24th start of the year. Bohmer went 1.1 innings giving up six earned runs on six hits with a pair of walks.
The game was scoreless after one inning, as the Huskies and Aggies both stranded runners on base.
The 2nd inning proved pivotal for Texas A&M as the Aggies pushed 13 runs across, putting UConn in a deep hole early on, 13-0.
The Huskies used four different pitchers in an effort to limit the damage in the 2nd inning. Redshirt-junior Sydnee Koosh came on in relief for Bohmer, making her 24th appearance of the season. Koosh faced six batters, giving up four earned runs off a grand slam. Bohmer re-entered the circle for Koosh and faced five hitters before being relieved by sophomore Amber Bretton, making her 22nd appearance of the season. After facing three batters, Bretton was relieved by graduate Jessica Walter, making her 40th appearances this season. Walter went on to pitch the rest of the game in the circle for the Huskies, going 2.1 innings, giving up two earned runs on four hits, adding a strikeout.
In the top of the 3rd inning, Savannah Ring got the Huskies on the board with her fifth home run of the season, a solo 231 foot shot off the left field scoreboard to make it 13-1.
Texas A&M's offense continued to put pressure on UConn's pitching, adding a run in the 3rd inning, and three more in the 4th inning, extending the Aggies lead to 17-1.
In the 5th inning, UConn manufactured two runs as Cat Petteys scored Caylee De Meo from second base on a single off the right field wall. The next batter, Kaitlyn Breslin brought home Ring on a groundout to shortstop, bringing the scoreline to 17-3. Despite the Huskies late rally efforts, they could not bring the score within eight runs, ending the game in a run-rule after five innings.
