BROOKLINE, Mass. – The UConn baseball team (15-15) earned a 21-5 run-rule victory at Northeastern (14-13) on Tuesday afternoon at Friedman Diamond.
Cam Righi led the way for the Huskies with a four-hit, eight RBI game that featured a two-out two-run triple in the second, a bases loaded walk in the fourth, a two-run single in the sixth and a three-run home run in the seventh inning.
UConn jumped in front in the first with a two-out, two-run home run for Jackson Marshall. It was his team-leading ninth of the season.
With the Huskies up 2-1 in the second, Righi delivered his first career triple to drive in a pair in the second.
After Northeastern tied the game in the third inning, the Huskies immediately responded with a four-spot in the fourth. Righi walked with the bases loaded to give UConn a 5-4 lead. Tyler Minick followed with a bases-clearing double down the left field line to extend the lead to 8-4.
Northeastern was seeking a crooked number inning of their own in the fourth with runners at second and third and no outs. RHP Sean Finn limited Boston Huskies to just one run with a pair of strikeouts and a ground out.
In the sixth, UConn broke open the game with a seven-run frame that featured a two-run single for Evan Menzel and Righi two-run single with the bases loaded.
UConn capitalized on a season-high 13 walks at the plate on Tuesday.
Chris Polemeni added a two-run single in the 7th to make it 18-5 before Righi launched his three-run homer to right center field.
JT Caruso pitched a scoreless inning of relief while Paxton Meyers finished the game with 2.0 shutout frames.
Game Notes
- UConn snapped a six-game losing streak to Northeastern with Tuesday's victory (April 26, 2022 at Northeastern).
- The Huskies entered the day 8-37 with the bases loaded. UConn went 4-6 on Tuesday with nine runs batted in.
- Tuesday was the second time this season that the Huskies drew double-digit walks (10, vs. Boston College).
- Joe Talarico earned his first career win with 1.2 innings pitched out of the pen.
- Cam Righi drove in eight runs against Northeastern. The most runs batted in since Paul Tammaro drove in nine runs against St. John's (April 14, 2024).
