WALTHAM, Mass. - The UConn men's hockey team completed the series sweep after shutting out Northeastern by a final of 2-0. Ethan Gardula and Alexandre Blais scored the goals for the Huskies while Tyler Muszelik made 16 saves in the shutout win.
The first period began with Northeastern jumping out on the early attack. After weathering the early rush by Northeastern, UConn found their legs and began attacking the Northeastern defense. After forcing a turnover in the defensive zone, UConn went on the attack as Ethan Whitcomb fired a puck across the crease where Ethan Gardula was in front of the net for the tip in goal, and the first goal of the evening. With the one goal lead, the Huskies defense and goaltender Tyler Muszelik shined preventing Northeastern from finding the back of the net in the period.
In the second period the Huskies offense continued as their forecheck continued creating offensive opportunities. The strong forecheck eventually paid off as Tabor Heaslip was able to keep the puck in the zone and find Alexandre Blais in front for the tip in goal giving UConn the 2-0 lead. With the two-goal lead, the Huskies defense continued limiting offensive opportunities for Northeastern holding them to just four shots on goal in the second period.
The third period was a defensive battle. UConn continued pressing for another goal while Northeastern looked to cut into the Huskies lead. With time running down in the third period, Northeastern pulled their netminder in favor of an extra skater, but the Huskies defense shut Northeastern down, putting their bodies on the line and blocking shots in the final minute to maintain the shutout. The Huskies defense and senior netminder Tyler Muszelik allowed just 16 shots on goal and stopped all shots faced.
UP NEXT: The Huskies will have the rest of the weekend off and turn their attention to a matchup against Maine beginning Feb. 13.
