Huskies Shutout Maine

ORONO, ME. – The UConn men's hockey team took game one of the two game series in Orono by a final of 2-0. Joey Muldowney and Ethan Gardula scored for the Huskies while senior Tyler Muszelik made 32 saves in the shutout.
The Huskies looked to get off to a strong start, pressuring the Black bears and looking to find the back of the net early. The Huskies pressure paid off as they drew two back-to-back penalties giving them the five on three advantage. The Huskies best chance on the power play came when Jake Richard fired a one-timer that rang off the post. Despite the two-man advantage, the Huskies were unable to find the back of the on the power play. Late in the first period with just over one minute left in the period, the Huskies were able to take the lead as Ryan Tattle won a faceoff in the offensive zone and Joey Muldowney ripped a shot that found its way past the Maine netminder giving UConn the 1-0 lead heading into the break.
The second period was a back-and-forth defensive battle. Maine came out strong in the second period looking for the equalizer, but the Huskies defense and senior Tyler Muszelik held strong. Special teams were on display in the second period as both teams combined for four penalties. The Huskies penalty kill was strong as they turned away every opportunity faced, as they entered the period break with the one goal lead.
In the third period, once again Maine attacked but after weathering the early rush by the Black Bears, the Huskies settled in and the defense shined. Midway through the period, a boarding penalty on Ethan Gardula gave Maine the man advantage. The Huskies penalty kill went to work and looked primed to extend their lead as Jake Percival caused a turnover and was alone on the breakaway, but his shot was turned away by Rousseau. With the penalty winding down, Ryan Tattle collected the loose puck and fired it to Gardula after stepping out of the box and on the breakaway the sophomore found the back of the net, giving UConn the 2-0 lead. The two-goal lead was all it took as Tyler Muszelik made 32 saves including 14 in the third period to secure the shutout win.
