UConn Comes Up Short Against St. John’s

STORRS, Conn. - UConn fell 3-1 to St. John's on Friday evening at the UConn Volleyball Center. The Huskies recorded 41 kills, eight service aces, 12 blocks, 36 assists and 29 digs in the match.
UConn opened the first set with a kill from Maja Daca, assisted by Audrey Jensen, and a Maggie Carley service ace to take a 2-0 lead. St. John's responded to tie the set at 2-2 before moving in front. Daca added another kill to bring the Huskies within one at 5-4 before the Red Storm won six consecutive points to build an 11-4 advantage. Hailey Maes halted the run with a block, while Courtney Grayson recorded two kills and Helena Einarsdottir added a service ace. Daca, Jordyn Hughes, Einarsdottir and Sydney Borowy each contributed kills late in the set, but St. John's maintained its lead to take the opener, 25-12.
UConn responded in the second set, rallying from an 18-16 deficit to even the score at 19-19. Jensen recorded a kill, Grayson added a block and Borowy followed with a kill to help the Huskies regain momentum. Einarsdottir put UConn in front, and Hughes added a late kill before Jensen sealed the 25-20 set win with back-to-back service aces.
St. John's opened the third set with four straight points before Borowy recorded a kill and Carley added a service ace to help UConn even the score at 4-4, aided by two Red Storm attack errors. After falling behind 6-4, the Huskies won five of the next six points to take a 9-7 lead, with Borowy contributing two kills, Hughes and Borowy combining for a block and Maes adding a kill. Daca and Grayson followed with kills, and Maes and Grayson teamed up for a block to give UConn a 12-10 advantage. St. John's rallied to tie the set at 12-12 and later broke a 14-14 score with four consecutive points before closing out the set with back-to-back service aces.
The Huskies built an 8-3 lead in set four behind back-to-back block points involving Maes and Hughes, a Grayson kill from Isabella Sohl and a Hazuna Akishige ace. The Red Storm answered to tie the set at 8-8, but UConn went back ahead 13-11 behind a Borowy/Hughes block and a Jensen ace. Hughes and Daca added kills as UConn continued to battle, cutting the deficit to 23-21 late in the set. However, St. John's closed out the match with a UConn service error followed by a kill to secure the 25-21 set win.
Borowy led the Huskies with 10 kills, while Daca and Grayson added eight kills apiece. Jensen recorded a team-high 18 assists and three service aces, while Hughes led the defense at the net with seven blocks. Maes added six blocks, and Akishige paced UConn with eight digs.
The Huskies return to action tomorrow, hosting the Seton Hall Pirates at 2:30 p.m. at the UConn Volleyball Center.
