Huskies Fall in Three Sets to Wildcats

VILLANOVA, Pa. - UConn dropped a 3-0 decision to Villanova (20-25, 19-25, 19-25) on Saturday evening at Jake Nevin Fieldhouse.
Helena Einarsdottir led UConn with nine kills while hitting .316 and adding four digs. Audrey Jensen finished with 25 assists, four digs and three block assists. Jordyn Hughes recorded a team-high five total blocks, including one solo block, and added four kills. Hazuna Akishige collected a team-best nine digs, two assists and one service ace.
In set one, UConn made its strongest push after falling behind 14-9, using two Sydney Borowy kills, a Hughes-Jensen block, and kills from Hughes and Einarsdottir to close the gap to 15-14. Daca added a kill and Hughes followed with a block to bring the Huskies within two at 18-16. UConn later fought off two set points with a Daca kill and a Villanova attack error, but the Wildcats closed out the opening set, 25-20.
UConn started the second set with a 4-0 lead, getting two early kills from Borowy and a service ace from Akishige before later pushing the margin to 9-4. Villanova worked back to tie the set at 11-11, but Courtney Grayson answered with a kill from Jensen to put UConn back ahead 12-11. After the score reached 12-12, Villanova moved in front during a five-point stretch, leaving UConn down 17-12 before a Jensen-Grayson block stopped the run. Einarsdottir, Olivia Pasternak and a solo block from Pasternak helped UConn collect late points, but Villanova closed the set with consecutive kills for a 25-19 finish.
The Huskies worked back from a 3-0 deficit to tie the third set at 4-4, but Villanova pulled ahead 13-6 and maintained the lead. Grayson, Pasternak and Hughes recorded kills during the early response, while Pasternak later teamed with Jensen for a block before serving an ace to cut the deficit to 14-10. UConn continued to find points through blocks from Hughes and Borowy and late kills from Grayson, Pasternak and Einarsdottir, with Einarsdottir's final kill making it 23-19. Villanova reached set point at 24-19 and closed out the 25-19 win.
UP NEXT: UConn returns home next weekend to take on St. John's on Oct. 9 and Seton Hall on Oct. 10 at the UConn Volleyball Center.
