Huskies Top Seton Hall for First BIG EAST Victory

STORRS, Conn. - UConn earned its first conference win of the season taking down Seton Hall, 3-1, on Saturday afternoon at the UConn Volleyball Center. The Huskies outblocked Seton Hall 16-4 and finished with 53 kills while holding Seton Hall to a .171 hitting percentage.
In the opening set, the Huskies jumped ahead 7-4 behind a Courtney Grayson service ace and a Jordyn Hughes kill. Seton Hall responded with three straight points to even the score at 7-7 before taking a 14-13 lead. The teams traded points until the Pirates built a 19-15 advantage, but Hazuna Akishige's ace and a Seton Hall setting error brought UConn within one at 19-18. The Pirates extended their lead to 22-19 before a Maja Daca kill sparked a late Husky rally. With Daca serving, UConn tied the set at 22-22 on consecutive blocks involving Grayson and Hailey Maes. The Huskies then closed out the set with a Seton Hall attack error and back-to-back kills from Sydney Borowy, including the set-clinching point assisted by Isabella Sohl, to take the opener, 25-22.
Seton Hall opened the second set with four consecutive points before the Huskies cut the deficit to 5-3 on a Borowy kill and an Audrey Jensen service ace. UConn stayed within one at 8-7 following a block by Grayson and Daca and trailed 13-11 after another Borowy kill. The Pirates then scored three straight points to extend their lead to 16-11. The Huskies responded by cutting a 19-13 deficit to 19-16 behind a Helena Einarsdottir kill, a Daca block and a Grayson kill. Daca added a kill and a service ace to bring UConn within four at 22-18, and Borowy recorded another kill late in the set before Seton Hall closed out the frame, 25-19, to even the match.
UConn responded to Seton Hall's first two points of the third set with a Daca service ace and a block from Maes and Grayson. The Huskies later built an 11-8 lead behind a series of blocks and Seton Hall attack errors. The Pirates moved within a point of taking the set at 24-21 following a UConn service error, but the Huskies rallied with five consecutive points to close out the set. Blocks involving Hughes with Jensen and Daca, followed by a Seton Hall attack error, evened the score at 24-24. Hughes then delivered back-to-back kills to secure a 26-24 set victory and give UConn a 2-1 match lead.
Grace Maria recorded a service ace and set up Daca for a kill as the Huskies took the first two points of the fourth set. Kills from Maes and Daca, along with a block by Daca and Grayson, helped UConn build a 7-2 lead. Seton Hall cut the deficit to three, but Jensen answered with a kill, Borowy added two kills and Jensen followed with a service ace to extend the advantage to 12-6. After the Pirates pulled within 12-8, Borowy, Daca and Maes helped the Huskies maintain control. Consecutive points on a Daca kill and a block by Daca and Grayson pushed UConn's lead to 19-10. Grayson added a kill for 20-11, and Daca followed with a service ace to make it 21-11. The Huskies closed out the set, 25-14, with late kills from Borowy and a final kill by Maes off an assist from Sohl to secure the match victory.
Borowy led the Huskies with 17 kills, followed by Daca with 12 and Hughes with seven. Daca recorded a team-high three service aces, while Jensen added two. Grayson led UConn at the net with 11 blocks, followed by Daca with five and Hughes with four. Sohl paced the offense with 26 assists, while Jensen added 20. Maria and Akishige tied for the team lead with 10 digs apiece.
UP NEXT: UConn hits the road for another pair of BIG EAST matchups, taking on Butler on Oct. 16 before facing Xavier on Oct. 17.
